Why is clean drinking water important for dogs?
Effects of contaminated water on dogs
Contaminated drinking water can cause a variety of health problems in dogs. Here are just some of them:
Diarrhoea and vomiting: Bacteria, viruses and parasites in the water can cause gastrointestinal illnesses such as diarrhoea and vomiting.
Allergies and skin problems: Chemicals and heavy metals in the water can cause allergies, itching and skin irritation in dogs with sensitive skin.
Kidney stones: High mineral content, especially calcium and magnesium, can increase the risk of kidney stones in dogs prone to them.
Long-term health effects: Chronic exposure to contaminants in water can increase the risk of bladder cancer, kidney disease and other chronic diseases in dogs.
If your dog is experiencing any of those symptoms, please visit a veterinary immediately!
Measures for clean drinking water for dogs
Here are 6 tips to help you hydrate your dog the right way during hot summer months!
Tap water: In many regions, tap water is of good quality and suitable for dogs. You can use tap water after it has drained for a few minutes to evaporate chlorine and other volatile substances.
Filtered water: If you have concerns about the quality of your tap water, you can use a water filter to remove contaminants. Be sure to choose a filter that is suitable for use with pets.
Spring water and still water: Spring water and mineral water can be a good alternative to tap water. When buying still water, make sure it is low in sodium as too much sodium can be harmful to dogs.
Fresh water: Make sure your dog always has fresh water available. Change the water daily and clean the bowl regularly.
Water on the go: Always take enough water for your dog with you when travelling or going for a walk. You can use portable water bottles or drinking bowls specially designed for dogs.
Ceramic bowls: A ceramic bowl keeps water cooler for your dog, promoting hydration and reducing parasites. It also adds a stylish touch to your home. So why not visit my shop?
Here are some additional tips for you and your pet!
Avoid puddles and stagnant water: these can be contaminated with bacteria, parasites and other harmful substances.
No sea water: Salt water can cause diarrhoea and vomiting in dogs.
Cool water: On hot days, you can offer your dog cool water to cool him down, but avoid ice water as this can lead to gastrointestinal problems.
Clean drinking water is crucial for your dog's health and well-being. By following the tips above, you can ensure that your dog always has access to fresh and safe water.
